![]() It was a real pleasure to be on Mike’s boat, we hope to return, and we’ll surely be sharing this amazing experience with friends coming to Chincoteague! Don’t miss this tour. You can tell he really loves this area and has a passion for what he does! We saw dolphins, lots of beautiful sea birds including eagles, and WILD PONIES! Mike knew where to go (and even kindly guided another nearby boat on how to navigate the marshlands to the prime viewing location). He tailored the trip to what we asked to see and added items of interest along the way. We had a ton of questions and he was able to answer every single one with a smile, such interesting detail, and a clearly amazing memory for relevant facts. He’s incredibly personable & knowledgeable about the area, it’s history, and its wild creatures. The boat is perfectly set up to chat and hang out with your group. His boat is gorgeous and clean, with plenty of comfortable couch-style, wrap-around seating. The wild horses in Chincoteague roam free, but are monitored by different organizations to maintain proper herd size in order to keep the island thriving. Each half of the island has a herd of horses. It is owned by Maryland and Virginia and divided by a fence in the middle. First, captain Mike was happily willing to accommodate us on a private tour early in the morning, with little notice, on an otherwise fully scheduled day. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1943. Situated in Accomack County of the US State of Virginia, the town of Chincoteague includes in its borders the Chincoteague Island and is well known for its namesake Ponies. It has a population of just under 3,000 according to 2019 estimates, making this small town with a total land area of 96.7 sq.
